A friend of mine has been coaching his son’s high school basketball team for the past couple of months. He was taking the whole thing pretty seriously – I barely ever saw him anymore. I went down to watch a game last night and had a chat with him afterwards. I complemented him on the victory and mentioned something about how rewarding it must be to work with youth.
“Youth can suck my dick,” he said. “They’re argumentative, demanding, rude, and unappreciative. Their lack of experience, and attitude towards the world in general, makes it impossible to respect any of their thoughts.”
I pointed out that some of his team members were within earshot. I didn’t think this was the kind of thing they should really hear.
“They could be standing right in front of me and they wouldn’t fucking listen.” He shook his head. “Even if they had some kind of counter argument I’d tell them to write it down and reread it in ten years. There’s no way any reasonable adult would be able to sympathise their piece of shit debate – even if was originally their own.”
I’m glad I caught him after a win.
