I was out yesterday having drinks with some friends. People are so busy with work and general life that we barely ever catch up. It was great to see everyone having a good time. Later in the night I found myself talking to some guy with a walking cane. He wasn't part of our group - I think he was at the pub by himself. “Have a look around this place,” he said.
I did - there was nothing out of the ordinary; just a bunch of people enjoying some Friday night drinks. “It's nice,” I replied. I wasn't sure what to say.
“Somehow it's normal for several hundred people to stand around killing brain cells with alcohol.”
“That's an interesting point,” I agreed; “we should really pass our spare time trying to better overall society.”
“Fuck that,” he said. “Society’s fine where it is. If there was a threat of death or nowhere to live we’d have to do something about it. At the moment we can spend our time getting boozed and watching sport.” He shook his head and limped away.
