I went round to my friend’s house and found him reading a
sporting records book from 1984. It was a little strange; not only was the book
20 years out of date, the guy reading it usually limited himself to science
fiction greats like Kurt Vonnegut and Douglas Adams. I had walked into his
house unannounced and was reading the book over his shoulder; I don’t think he’d
even noticed me. “What are you reading that for?” I asked. “I realised that I’m so out of touch with the real world that if I did travel back in time there would be no way I could make any money,” he replied. “I figured betting on sporting events is the easiest option so I bought a few books.”
“That is absolutely ridiculous,” I said. “Can you believe this guy Uwe Hohn threw a javelin over 100 meters? That is just unbeatable. He’ll hold that record until the end of time.”
“Time doesn’t end,” my friend replied.
I don’t think he understood just how far that javelin travelled.
