For the past couple of days my boss’s son has been hanging around the office to learn the trade. He’s not a bad kid but to be honest it’s all a little annoying. I find it easier to simply cruise through my daily schedule than explain the tasks to someone else. By about mid-morning on the first day I’d sent him off to make me a cup of tea. He returned to my office, placed the mug on my desk, and walked away without word. I wasn’t sure where he’d wandered off too, and I didn’t really care – it was one less concern for my Monday morning. He came in about a half an hour later and apologised for his absence.
“That’s ok,” I said; I didn’t even bother inquiring into his whereabouts.
“So how was your coffee?” he asked, clearly proud of his efforts.
“Coffee?” I repeated. I brought the half-empty beverage to my nose, and took a cautious sip. There were no two ways about it; I’d been drinking coffee. “Shit, I could swear I’d been drinking tea,” I said. “I guess it proves just how powerful the really mind is.”
“Powerful?” he said. “If anything it shows mental debility. It couldn’t even detect the difference between vastly dissimilar flavours.”
I didn’t know what to say. It was one of those moments in time that make you question everything you thought you knew.
“Go and file these,” I said, handing him a backlog of paperwork.
