Everyone agreed that speeding up the rotation of the earth was taking it a bit far; but when unions get involved things just get carried away. To be honest, I have to side with big business of this one. Workers’ organisations put so much time and effort into shortening the working week that society became unproductive. In less than thirty years working requirements had been reduced from 40 hours a week to just ten. When ExxonMobil and Toyota announced plans to reduce the length of the day, the general population was quite supportive of the idea; with so much time on their hands people were getting bored. Legislation stated that no employee could be forced to work more than two hours a day; however, if a day lasted just four hours, half of the worker’s life would be on company time. Unions of course kicked up a fuss and are now demanding a 30 minute work day. They talk about changing the required working week to a percentage of real time; I can’t see why they’d bother, surely big business could work their way around that as well.
