Kurt couldn’t believe the rubbish his wife would subject herself to; Life and Style, Entertainment Weekly, OK Magazine. Every now and then he would pick up a publication and scan the pages. The do’s and don’t’s of fashion, celebrity speculation, advice on physical self-improvement; not once did he stumble upon an article of interest. Kurt was quick to conclude that the magazines were not aimed at his demographic. Every now and then his wife would comment on a picture or story – ‘oh my god’ or ‘I can’t believe it’ – but she never discussed it with her husband. This morning the couple were seated in a waiting room at the medical centre. Kurt’s wife held up a page for him to inspect; it was an attractive, slim blond in a tiny bathing suit. “Can you believe this?” she asked. “Young people are lead to believe that this is a realistic body type. No wonder people are so self-conscious.”
Kurt considered his wife’s opinion. He had just finished reading an article on the rise of obesity and the health risks associated. He looked around the room; not one person remotely reflected the image displayed. Popular culture’s message clearly wasn’t getting through.
“That’s just disgusting dear,” he said, shaking his head in disapproval.
