My friend told a theory about music. He believes that the industry works in ten-year transitional periods. Every decade or so things get shaken up a little, then people need time to adjust before they get bored and are ready for the next movement. He said the swing music of the 50’s was absolutely revolutionary, the refinement of rock ‘n roll during 70’s was near perfection, and the grunge movement of the 90’s paved a totally new untrodden path. I was kind of glad to hear the theory and out of excitement took it on board completely. In the back of my mind I could think of at least one artist that was making new ground in each of the overlooked periods. During the 60’s Jimi Hendrix was taking music to new dimensions, David Bowie broke down the parameters of the 80’s, and the Black Keys tore up the beginning of the new millennium. I still hope my friend is right though; I am absolutely sick of the shit that’s currently flooding the radio.
