I don’t know enough about science to really understand how the blades of grass grown in the field end up as delicious t-bone steak. My entire scientific knowledge comes from They Might Be Giant’s version of ‘Why Does the Sun Shine,’ which, although a great song, is really quite irrelevant. I understand that the microorganisms involved in the transformation are completely unaware of the overall process, but I feel for them regardless. Some particles undergo the following: As an element of grass they are broken from the root, masticated, and broken down in, not one, but four separate acid filled stomachs. They become a part of the cow which is slaughtered, diced, and frozen. As they now make up a cut of meat they are sliced, brought to extremely high temperatures, and served as helpless prey. They are an essential part of a meal which is masticated, digested, and then defecated. The resulting shit of which these particles are now a part is drowned in toilet water, united with other faeces, and sent out to face the dangers of the sea. The particle may be unaware of the overall process but it’s still a horrible thing to go through.
