About 20 years ago my sister asked what fruit I thought might make the best weapon. She was only about five at the time but for some reason the question has always stuck with me. I considered the usual suspects...
Watermelon: large, heavy, and therefore dangerous.
Coconut: they fall and kill hundreds each year.
Pineapple: dense and prickly, especially that part at the top – two strike possibilities.
Then I considered the outside options.
Durian: a lethal-looking thorny fruit native to South East Asia
Cashew: technically a fruit seed – could kill an anaphylactic
Apple: pit could be used to create cyanide.
I never considered the kiwifruit. Other than the likeness in form to a hand grenade, it seemed completely harmless. With its smooth fluffy skin, soft texture, kalidoscpoe appearance, and abundance of vitamin C, what harm could it do? Today I shovelled into a Kiwifruit with a spoon and cut my finger on the inner stalk. It pierced right up under my nail. It really hurt.
