Every now and then I help an elderly neighbour with some chores around the house. I’ve been doing it since I can remember – I think it was my wife’s idea. The little old lady always thanks me with homemade cakes and chocolates, and she says the warmest things you could ever want to hear. “If you were arrested for kindness there’d be enough evidence to convict,” she smiles; or, “there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness; every good deed creates an endless ripple.”
I went round her house to clean out the gutters this afternoon – she has a couple of big deciduous trees on her property so they often get clogged at this time of year. I was packing the leaves into the compost bin when she came over with a warm cup of tea and a tray of biscuits. “You’re worth your weight in methamphetamines,” she said, looking at the pile of leaves.
