My girlfriend is one of the loveliest people you’ll ever
meet; unfortunately I’m just not interested in the things she talks about. Her
conversations are always concerned with her friends and family or current television
programs. I was really taken aback yesterday when she asked me an interesting
question. We were watching some travel show about Eastern Europe and she said: “If
you could go anywhere in the world where would it be?” I thought about my response for a moment; it was a pretty big question.
“I’d either go to Vienna during 1897 or Odessa in the 1820’s,” I said.
“You can’t choose a period of time,” she snapped.
“Why not?” I asked. “You’ve given me a hypothetical question and I’ve responded with a hypothetical answer. Where did all these parameters come from?”
“My question was at least a little realistic,” she said.
“We’ve got a five-hundred-thousand-dollar mortgage. Where do you think we can afford to go?”
She ignored my response and returned her concentration to the program; they were talking about Odessa during the 1820’s.
