I don’t really have an issue with metafiction. I would be impressed if the ‘i’ in the word impressed was somehow aware of its own function. I am, however, concerned with fiction that’s unaware of itself, yet conscious of outside world. Hollywood films commit this atrocity with such frequency that the general population now overlooks it. Actors, while in character, often make references to other celebrities. We are somehow supposed to forget that the actor is also part of this famous crowd. It has gone so far that celebrities will now make guest appearances on running sitcoms. The resident actors are somehow oblivious of their own fame yet accept the onset celebrity’s. The next logical step is a sitcom where each actor recognises their co-workers stardom yet completely ignores their own.
