I don’t really enjoy uncomfortable situations, and this weekend was the worst. I was sitting there minding my own business when the lives of the people around me were blasted into a million pieces. I’m probably being a little dramatic but it was awkward none the less. I had just introduced my girlfriend to some girl I know from the office. I sat there for a while listening to them chat about virtually nothing; their conversations seemed limited to shitty television shows and local shops and restaurants. I drifted off into my own little world so I wouldn’t have to hear it. I eventually returned from my trance to find them talking about each other. They realised that they shared a surname, their parents worked at the same business, and their fathers were in fact the same person. It was kind of surprising because they really look nothing alike. An exchange of family photos confirmed their suspicion and the rest of the evening was spent planning revenge on the guy. I of course felt sorry for them both but I didn’t know what to say. I just couldn’t stop thinking about their father. I guess he had hated his first family so much that he had gone and got a whole new one. Surely it would’ve been easier to buy a fishing rod or take up golf.
