David was always going to find it difficult to tell people he was gay. He had been living a lie for so long that he had started to believe it himself. It didn’t help that his father was an unrestrained homophobic. His dad used the word ‘gay’ as an insult, as if it were an involuntary action. During a football match his use of the word ‘gay’ would escalate alongside his increased heart rate. David wasn’t really bothered by his dad’s open insults; he understood how things were, where and when his dad had grown up. He didn’t expect his dad to be so sympathetic. It was still going to be hard for David to tell his father he was gay, but it was going to be much more difficult for David to tell his own wife and children.
