I talked Nathan into an overseas trip a few years back. It was one of the funniest experiences of my life. He has a really negative attitude and I thought the expedition might help alter it. Our adventure began at the breathtaking Iguazu Falls. We sat on the Argentinean bank and looked across at the huge mass of water. “All this way just to watch gravity at work,” said Nathan. “You know parabolic flights have been operating for over fifty years.” The journey continued with a short stay in the remarkable Galapagos Islands. We stood in a remote national park and watched the unique mating call of a frigate bird. “All this way just to see a male try and pick up,” said Nathan. “You know with Internet dating people’s personalities are matched before they even meet.” Our expedition moved on to the magical Machu Picchu. We perched ourselves at the top of Mount Huayna Picchu and looked out over the ancient ruins. “All this way just to look at the remains of a small town,” said Nathan. “You know we have cities that are home to over ten million people.” It was certainly a fresh take on the wonders of the world. I rerouted our itinerary so the remaining days could be spent in Ibiza. I’d given up hope of impressing my friend with anything enriching. We went to a pumping nightclub full of attractive young tourists. “It’s nice here,” said Nathan, looking at me over the top of an oversized cocktail glass; “it does lack a bit of culture though.”
