Andy met his girlfriend in a dingy pub late on a Tuesday night. It obviously wasn’t the most romantic story but he loved the girl and was looking forward to spending the rest of his life with her. His only concern about the marriage was breaking the news of their first encounter to their unborn children; the colour of the invitations, the style of music played, and the number of second cousins invited were all secondary. Andy considered his own parents: ‘how had they met?’ He was certain they had a similar story to his own; they had kept it from him all these years. Andy decided to make the trip down to his childhood home. A few hours later he was standing outside the familiar weatherboard house. He walked up the garden path and knocked on the door. An accurate prediction of what Andy might look like in 30 years answered.
“How did you and mum meet?” Andy blurted out.
“Good thank you,” his father joked. “How are you?”
“Sorry dad. It’s just I’m getting married next week and I’m a little stressed out. I really need to know how you and mum met.”
“It’s a funny story actually,” the old man began. “I was pulling out of the pub on a Thursday afternoon and I crashed straight into a passing vehicle. The most beautiful girl got out and started yelling at me. She eventually calmed down enough for us to exchange insurance details; her phone number happened to be one of pieces of information she passed on. I gave her about a week to cool off before I rang and asked her out.”
“That’s a great story,” said Andy.
“Well you know what they say: ‘The trick to a long happy marriage is a great first encounter.’”
The following day Andy called the wedding off and broke up with his girlfriend. Oh his way home he was involved in three separate car accidents.
