My friend Jake is probably the least fashionable person I’ve ever met. It’s not because he’s 20 kilos overweight, unkempt, and balding, although that doesn’t exactly help; it’s his choice of attire. I don’t think he’s bought a single item of clothing since the mid nineties. Jake wears the same pair of baby blue denim jeans every time we go out. He usually couples it with a loose fitting concert shirt and pair of worn sneakers. Last weekend I caught up with him for a few drinks. He wanted to go home early because he didn’t have much money, which struck me as a little strange; Jake is a very successful computer programmer, has no hobbies that I know of, and rents a cheap two bedroom apartment. I told him I’d be happy to pay for a couple of rounds, but I couldn’t help but inquire into his expenses – where was all his money going?
“I bought a new suit jacket yesterday,” he replied. “Cost me a fortune.”
“Really,” I smiled, happy that my friend was updating his style. “Why aren’t you wearing it?”
“It’s too small,” he said.
“But you only just bought it,” I pushed, somewhat surprised. “Why would you buy the wrong size jacket?”
“I figure, if I buy smaller clothes, I’ll have to lose some weight.”
“That’s interesting,” I mused, impressed with the change in lifestyle.
“I know,” he said. “If I lose some weight I’ll have the most amazing wardrobe. My spare room is packed with clothes from the past 15 years. They’re all just a little small.
