We know that the apocalypse will kill all life on earth except for cockroaches. World economies will collapse, people will rebel, and governments, with limited other options, will blast nuclear devices in random directions. We assume the apocalypse is a massive revelation, but that’s only because we weren’t around to see it happen last time. The most recent apocalypse occurred several billion years ago. At the time the earth’s atmosphere was made up of a potent substance. If this substance was released into our current atmosphere all life on earth would be destroyed; but things were different back then. The living entities of the time could only survive within that environment. Over millions of years the life forms evolved in much the same way as we have. They developed from hunting and gathering communities into complex subsistent societies. They created combustible engines, harnessed electricity, and enjoyed HBO television series and the Internet. Eventually their economies collapsed, people rebelled, and governments, with limited other options, blasted oxygen-based weapons in random directions killing all life on earth except for small oxygen-surviving cells known as eukaryotes. In the future cockroaches will create combustible engines, harness electricity, and enjoy HBO television series and the internet; this will of course happen moments before they destroy all life on earth except for a small seemingly futile species.
