As a married man Carlos spent the majority of his time at
odds with his wife. Carlos was always in trouble. His inability to feign
interest in his wife’s clothing was an issue, his enthusiasm for his football
team caused problems, his tendency to stay late at work lead to disputes. On
the odd occasion that his wife had no drama at hand, she would usually revert
to one of these favourites. After 15 years of marriage Carlos had long given up
hope of rational behaviour.
It had been almost two days since an enraged outburst. Carlos had never felt so on edge. Something was up. “How would you feel about not going to dinner tomorrow night?” his wife calmly enquired. Carlos hesitated. He didn’t care whether they went out or not – it was his wife who had made reservations at Vue de Monde – but was it a trap? If Carlos wanted to stay home, he would be throwing the gesture back in her face; if Carlos wished to dine out, he would be defying her desire. If Carlos informed her that he didn’t care either way, she would probably rip his balls off.
Carlos awoke several hours later in St. Vincent Memorial Hospital. He’d passed out from the stress of it all.
