“It really upsets me,” moped Alfonzo. “People have started to call me pretentious, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ve always prided myself on being open and excepting.”
Dr. Lavskowski made several notes on a legal pad, then looked up at his patient. “When did you first notice these remarks?” he asked, sternly.
“About two months ago,” said Alfonzo. “They’ve been consistent ever since.”
“And what do you believe has brought about such comments?”
“It’s the people I associate with,” Alfonzo snivelled. “I don’t even like them; they’re cold-hearted and selfish, but they just keep hanging around.” He broke down in tears.
“I have to admit that I’ve never treated a café before,” apologised the doctor, “but you appear to be a gentle, friendly establishment.”
“Thank you,” Alfonzo sniffed.
“I would agree that labelling you pretentious is terribly unfair. Your clientele may be rude and self-important, but that is no reflection of you...”
Alfonzo smiled.
“...and, in my experience,” the doctor continued, “crowds such as these usually hang around for short periods of time; they then move on to destroy the ambience of other coffee shops.” He paused momentarily. “Try and ignore their comments; in a few weeks everything should be back to normal.”
“Thank you so much doctor.” Alfonzo Café signed some paperwork and skipped merry from the consultation room.
“You wouldn’t read about it,” the doctor laughed; “a café pretentious enough to seek a psychiatrist.”
