The balcony is an essential requirement to inner-city living; it comes second only to seeking an apartment within the CBD. There is no better place to scan the morning paper or enjoy an early cup of coffee; it is the perfect location for the nightly meal or midweek wine, and is ideal for an afternoon drinking session or evening get together. Walking through the major cities of the world, regardless of economic standing, one merely has to tilt their head towards the sky in order to see thousands of these perfectly designed structures. I often look up and imagine the world of enjoyment that is permanently absent from the small city sanctuaries. At any given time less than a single percent of the outdoor area is ever utilised, and even then, it’s invariably an old woman moping tiles or young professional hanging washing.
